Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Now, you might think that the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but its origins actually go back further. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France in the 1790s. However, it had no pedals; riders pushed themselves along with their feet. It wasn't until 1860s that pedals were added to the front wheel in France. Then, in 1870s, the 'penny-farthing' became popular in Britain, with a very large front wheel and a small rear wheel. But it was dangerous to ride. Finally, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced, with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, which is the design we still use today.
