The first bicycle, invented in 1817 by Karl von Drais, was called a 'running machine' because it had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. However, it was nicknamed the 'boneshaker' due to its uncomfortable ride on rough roads. By the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' emerged with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, making cycling much safer and more popular, especially among women.
