Today's lecture is about the history of the bicycle. Now, many people assume the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and that's partly true, but the very first two-wheeled, pedal-less device appeared in 1817, invented by a German baron. It was called a 'running machine' because riders pushed their feet along the ground. Later, in the 1860s, French inventors added pedals to the front wheel. However, this design was dangerous because riders could easily fall forward. It wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels became popular, which is the design we still use today.
