Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding parks and community gardens to city centers can reduce local temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius. However, the benefits go beyond cooling. These spaces also improve mental health, as residents report lower stress levels when they have access to nature. Interestingly, the study noted that the size of the green space matters less than its proximity to homes. Even small pocket parks, if within a five-minute walk, have a significant positive impact. So, city planners should prioritize distribution over sheer area.
