Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. Recent studies show that parks can reduce surrounding air temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the effect is not uniform. It depends on factors like park size, vegetation density, and proximity to water bodies. For example, a large park with dense trees and a central pond can create a cooling effect that extends several hundred meters beyond its borders. In contrast, small grassy areas with scattered trees provide only minimal local cooling. Therefore, city planners should prioritize creating a few large, well-designed green spaces rather than many small ones.
