Good morning, class. Today we're discussing the history of the bicycle. The first pedal-powered bicycle was invented in the 1860s in France, but it wasn't until the 1880s that the chain drive and pneumatic tires were introduced, making bicycles much safer and more comfortable. Interestingly, the bicycle played a crucial role in the women's suffrage movement in the late 19th century, as it gave women greater mobility and independence. By the early 20th century, bicycles had become a popular mode of transport worldwide, though they were later overshadowed by cars. However, recent environmental concerns have renewed interest in cycling as a sustainable option.
