Many people assume that the postal system began with the invention of the stamp in the 19th century, but in fact, organized courier services existed in ancient Egypt and China. However, the first truly public postal service, where ordinary citizens could send letters, was established in Britain in 1635. Interestingly, it was King Charles I who made this service available to the public, but it was not until 1840 that the famous Penny Post was introduced, which made sending letters affordable for everyone. So, while stamps are important, the real turning point was the 17th century.
