Many people assume that the postal system began in Europe, but in fact, the earliest known postal service was established in China during the Qin Dynasty, around 200 BC. However, it was primarily used for official government messages. It wasn't until the 19th century that the first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, was introduced in Britain, which allowed ordinary citizens to send mail easily. Interestingly, the cost of sending a letter was originally paid by the recipient, not the sender.
