Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks in cities can reduce local temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during summer. This cooling effect occurs because trees provide shade and release water vapor through transpiration. Additionally, green roofs on buildings can absorb rainwater, reducing the risk of flooding. However, the lecturer emphasizes that the location of these spaces matters. For instance, a small park near a busy road may not offer the same benefits as a larger, connected green area. So, when planning, city officials should prioritize creating networks of green corridors rather than isolated patches.
