Today, in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban development on local wildlife. A recent study in Melbourne focused on the common brushtail possum. Researchers found that while possums adapt well to city parks, their diet changes significantly. In natural habitats, they eat leaves and flowers, but in urban areas, they consume more human-provided food, like bread and fruit scraps. This shift has led to health issues, including dental problems and obesity. Interestingly, the study also showed that possums in suburbs with more native trees had healthier diets. So, city planners should prioritize planting native vegetation to support urban wildlife.
