Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first pedal-powered bicycle was invented in the 1830s, but it wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels became popular. This design was much safer than the earlier 'penny-farthing' which had a huge front wheel. Interestingly, the safety bicycle's popularity also influenced women's fashion, as it encouraged more practical clothing. By the early 20th century, bicycles had become a common means of transport, especially for workers. However, their use declined with the rise of cars in the 1950s.
