Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the postal service. Before the 19th century, sending letters was extremely expensive, and the recipient, not the sender, had to pay. This often led to people refusing to accept mail. In 1840, the UK introduced the Penny Post, which meant a uniform low rate was paid by the sender. This innovation dramatically increased the volume of mail. Interestingly, the first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, was also issued in Britain that same year. The system was so successful that other countries, including the US and Brazil, adopted similar models within a decade.
