Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Although many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, its origins actually go back further. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France around 1790. However, it had no pedals and riders pushed themselves along with their feet. In 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, but this design was unstable. It wasn't until 1885 that the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels was developed in England. This design became the basis for modern bicycles.
