Today in our environmental science lecture, we discussed the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. Professor Thompson highlighted a study from Melbourne, where researchers measured temperature differences between parks and surrounding built-up areas. They found that on hot summer days, large parks with dense tree coverage were, on average, 4 degrees cooler than nearby streets. However, small grassy areas without many trees had a much smaller cooling effect, only about 1 degree. The professor stressed that the key factor was not just the size of the green space, but the density and height of the vegetation, which provided shade and increased evapotranspiration.
