Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and that's partly true. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called the 'draisine', appeared in 1817, but it had no pedals. The modern bicycle with pedals and a chain was developed in the 1880s. Interestingly, the safety bicycle, which had two equal-sized wheels, became popular in the 1890s, and it was this design that made cycling accessible to women, as it was safer and easier to ride than the earlier high-wheeled models. So, the key change in the 1890s was not speed, but safety and comfort.
