Today we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Manchester found that adding trees and parks to city centers can reduce summer temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius. This is mainly because plants provide shade and release moisture through transpiration. Interestingly, the effect is strongest within 50 meters of the green area, but it diminishes rapidly beyond that. The researchers also noted that vertical gardens on buildings have a smaller cooling effect compared to ground-level parks, though they save space. However, the study warns that increasing green spaces alone won't solve heat issues unless combined with lighter-colored paving materials.
