In today's lecture, we'll discuss the history of coffee. Coffee originated in Ethiopia, where legend says a goat herder noticed his goats became energetic after eating certain berries. By the 15th century, coffee was being cultivated in Yemen, and it spread to Persia, Egypt, and Turkey. In the 17th century, coffee houses appeared in Europe, becoming centers for social interaction and intellectual debate. However, in some countries, coffee was initially banned. For example, in the 16th century, some Muslim rulers prohibited it because they believed it was intoxicating, but the ban was later lifted due to its popularity. Today, coffee is one of the most traded commodities globally.
