Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and trees in city centers can reduce local temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Interestingly, the effect is strongest when green areas are connected, forming corridors rather than isolated patches. However, the researchers noted that maintenance costs are often underestimated, and they recommend using native plants to lower water usage. Also, community involvement is crucial for long-term success, as residents tend to protect spaces they help design.
