Today in our ecology lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban development on local wildlife. A recent study in Melbourne tracked the behavior of possums in suburban areas. Researchers found that possums adapted to city life by changing their sleeping patterns. Instead of being strictly nocturnal, some became active during twilight hours to avoid traffic noise. Additionally, their diet shifted from native leaves to garden plants and even food scraps. However, this adaptation has a downside: increased contact with humans has led to higher stress levels and shorter lifespans. The study suggests that preserving green corridors is crucial to maintain natural behaviors.
