Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, appeared in 1817. However, it had no pedals, so riders had to push their feet against the ground to move. Then, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the velocipede. But this was very uncomfortable because of its solid rubber tires and rigid frame. It wasn't until 1885 that the modern safety bicycle, with a chain drive and equally sized wheels, was developed. This design made cycling much safer and more practical for everyday use.
