In today's lecture, we will discuss the impact of urban green spaces on mental health. Recent studies have shown that access to parks and gardens can significantly reduce stress levels. However, the key factor is not just the presence of green areas, but their quality and accessibility. For instance, a study in Melbourne found that residents living within 300 meters of a well-maintained park reported lower anxiety levels compared to those with distant or poorly maintained green spaces. Interestingly, the benefits were stronger for older adults than for younger people. So, city planners should prioritize investing in the upkeep and distribution of these spaces rather than simply increasing their number.
