Many people believe that the first postal system was invented by the Romans, but actually, the Persians had a similar system centuries earlier. The Persian system, called the 'Chapar Khaneh', used mounted couriers to deliver messages across the empire. Interestingly, it was not used for personal letters but only for official communications. Later, the Romans improved on this by establishing relay stations where horses could be changed, allowing messages to travel faster. However, the Roman system was also limited to government use. It wasn't until the 19th century that postal services became available to the general public, thanks to the introduction of the postage stamp.
