Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Although many people credit Karl Drais with inventing the first bicycle in 1817, his 'running machine' had no pedals. It was propelled by pushing your feet against the ground. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France. However, these early bicycles were difficult to ride because of their heavy wooden frames and iron tires. It wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive was introduced, making cycling much safer and more popular. This design became the basis for modern bicycles.
