Now, you might think it was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled, pedal-less machine appeared in 1817, invented by a German baron, Karl von Drais. It was called a 'draisine' or 'hobby horse', and riders pushed their feet along the ground to move. Later, in the 1860s, French inventors added pedals to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. However, this design was uncomfortable and difficult to ride. It wasn't until the 1880s that the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels was developed, which became the basis for modern bicycles. So, the key point is that the bicycle evolved over several decades.
