Now, many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, a primitive version appeared in the late 18th century in France. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in England, which made riding faster but also more dangerous. The modern bicycle, with a chain drive to the rear wheel, didn't become popular until the 1880s. This design was much safer and more efficient, and it quickly spread across Europe and North America.
