Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. Many people think the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'draisine', appeared in 1817. It had no pedals; you pushed it with your feet. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'velocipede'. However, this design was very uncomfortable because of the solid rubber tires. It wasn't until the 1880s that the modern 'safety bicycle' with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive was developed, which made cycling much safer and more popular.
