Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people assume the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but its origins actually go back further. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France around 1790. However, it had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. It wasn't until 1839 that a Scottish blacksmith named Kirkpatrick Macmillan added pedals to the front wheel. Interestingly, his invention didn't become popular because roads were too rough at the time. It was only in the 1860s, when metal tires were introduced in France, that bicycles gained widespread use.
