Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, contrary to popular belief, the bicycle wasn't invented in France or England, but in Germany. In 1817, a German baron named Karl von Drais created a wooden, two-wheeled vehicle that riders pushed along with their feet. He called it the 'Laufmaschine' or 'running machine'. It wasn't until the 1860s in France that pedals were added to the front wheel. Interestingly, the first bicycles with pedals were known as 'boneshakers' because they were so uncomfortable on rough roads. The real breakthrough, however, came in 1885 when John Kemp Starley designed the 'Rover', which had a chain-driven rear wheel, making cycling much safer and more practical.
