Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban development on local wildlife. One key example is the peregrine falcon, which has adapted remarkably to city life. Unlike many birds that struggle with noise and tall buildings, peregrines nest on skyscrapers and bridges, where they find abundant prey like pigeons. However, a recent study in Chicago found that young falcons in urban areas have a lower survival rate than those in rural cliffs, mainly due to collisions with glass windows. Interestingly, the study also noted that urban falcons breed earlier in the season, possibly because of warmer microclimates around buildings.
