Today in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss urban heat islands. Cities tend to be warmer than surrounding rural areas because concrete and asphalt absorb and re-emit heat. One solution is increasing green spaces, like parks and green roofs. However, a lesser-known factor is the albedo effect, where lighter-colored surfaces reflect sunlight. A study in Los Angeles found that painting roads white could reduce temperatures by up to 3 degrees Celsius, but this requires regular maintenance. Another approach involves planting deciduous trees, which provide shade in summer and allow sunlight in winter. The key is combining strategies for maximum impact.
