Today we're going to discuss the history of the postal service. You might be surprised to learn that the first organized postal system was established in ancient Persia around 550 BC. However, it was the Romans who developed a more efficient relay system, where riders changed horses at stations every few miles. This allowed messages to travel up to 170 miles per day. Interestingly, the service was initially reserved for government and military use, and ordinary citizens were not allowed to send letters until much later. By the 16th century, private postal services emerged in Europe, offering faster delivery for a fee.
