Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce city temperatures by up to five degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the benefits are not just physical. Researchers found that residents living within a ten-minute walk of a green space reported lower stress levels and improved mental well-being. Interestingly, the size of the green area matters less than its accessibility. Even small pocket parks can have a significant positive impact if they are well-maintained and safe. So, city planners should prioritize creating distributed, accessible green spots rather than focusing only on a few large parks.
