Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Early bicycles in the 19th century had wooden wheels and no pedals; riders pushed their feet along the ground. The first major improvement came in the 1860s with the addition of pedals to the front wheel. However, these 'penny-farthings' were dangerous because of their large front wheel. In 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, making it much more stable. Later, pneumatic tires were added, which greatly improved comfort and speed. By the early 20th century, bicycles became affordable for the general public.
