It had no pedals, and riders pushed their feet against the ground to move. Later, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the velocipede, also known as the boneshaker due to its rough ride. However, it wasn't until 1885 that the modern safety bicycle, with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels, was developed by John Kemp Starley. This design became the basis for today's bicycles.
