It had no pedals, and riders pushed their feet against the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'penny-farthing', which had a very large front wheel for speed. However, it was dangerous. In 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive to the rear wheel, making it much safer and more practical. This design became the basis for modern bicycles.
