Good morning. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, many people assume the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but actually, early versions appeared much earlier. However, the key development came in 1885 when John Kemp Starley introduced the 'Rover' safety bicycle. This design featured a chain drive to the rear wheel and equal-sized wheels, making it much safer and easier to ride than the earlier 'penny-farthing' with its huge front wheel. The safety bicycle quickly gained popularity, and by the 1890s, cycling had become a widespread leisure activity for both men and women. Interestingly, the pneumatic tire, invented by John Dunlop in 1888, was initially developed for bicycles, not cars. So, the bicycle's impact on society was profound, enabling personal mobility for the masses.
