Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle, focusing on its early development. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, appeared in 1817, but it had no pedals. Riders pushed their feet against the ground. Then, in the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel in France. This design, known as the velocipede, was nicknamed the 'boneshaker' because riding on rough roads was extremely uncomfortable. Later, in the 1870s, the high-wheel bicycle became popular, with a very large front wheel to increase speed. However, it was dangerous to ride. Finally, the safety bicycle with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels was introduced in the 1880s, which is the basis for modern bikes.
