Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. Now, you might think that the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, and in fact, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'draisine', appeared in 1817. However, it had no pedals. The pedals were added in the 1860s, and later, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive was introduced. Interestingly, the pneumatic tire, which we all rely on for comfort, was not invented until 1888 by a Scottish veterinarian named John Boyd Dunlop. He originally designed it for his son's tricycle to make the ride smoother.
