Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in the early 19th century, but it had no pedals. Riders pushed themselves along with their feet. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the 'boneshaker'. However, it was very uncomfortable due to its rigid frame. The 'penny-farthing' followed in the 1870s, with a large front wheel that allowed greater speed but was dangerous. Finally, in 1885, the 'safety bicycle' was introduced, featuring equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, which made cycling safer and more practical.
