Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks can reduce local temperatures by up to four degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the key factor is not just the number of parks, but their connectivity. Green corridors allow animals to move and help cool air flow through the city. Interestingly, the study also showed that rooftop gardens, while beneficial for insulation, have less impact on street-level cooling than previously thought. So, for maximum effect, city planners should prioritize linking existing green areas rather than creating isolated ones.
