Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban heat islands. A recent study in Melbourne found that planting trees along streets can reduce local temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during summer afternoons. However, the effectiveness depends on tree species. Deciduous trees, which lose leaves in winter, are better for temperate climates because they allow sunlight in winter, while evergreen trees block it. The study also noted that green roofs and reflective pavements are less effective than trees but still contribute to a 1-2 degree drop. So, the key is to choose the right trees and place them strategically.
