Good morning, class. Today we'll discuss the history of the bicycle. The first bicycle, called the Draisienne, was invented in 1817 by Karl Drais. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, creating the velocipede, also known as the 'boneshaker' due to its rough ride. Later, the high-wheel bicycle became popular in the 1870s because it allowed greater speed, but it was dangerous. Finally, the safety bicycle, with two equal-sized wheels and a chain drive, emerged in the 1880s, making cycling much safer and more accessible to the general public.
