Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. Recent studies show that parks and community gardens can reduce city temperatures by up to 5 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, the key factor isn't just the number of trees, but their distribution. A single large park has less cooling effect than many small green areas spread throughout the city. This is because smaller spaces allow air to circulate more effectively and reach residential zones. Interestingly, rooftop gardens are also beneficial, but they require more maintenance and are less effective for ground-level cooling compared to street-level planting. So, for future city planning, we should prioritize a network of small green pockets rather than relying on one central park.
