Today's lecture is about the history of the lighthouse. The first known lighthouse was the Pharos of Alexandria, built around 280 BC. However, it wasn't until the 18th century that lighthouses became widespread, especially along the coast of Britain. Interestingly, the Eddystone Lighthouse, completed in 1759, was the first to use a lantern with a parabolic reflector, which greatly increased its visibility. Before that, most lighthouses used open fires. This innovation was crucial for maritime safety, as it allowed ships to see the light from much farther away, reducing the risk of shipwrecks on rocky shores.
