Good morning, everyone. Today we're going to discuss the history of the bicycle. The first two-wheeled vehicle, called a draisine, was invented in Germany in 1817. It had no pedals; riders pushed their feet against the ground. In the 1860s, pedals were added to the front wheel, leading to the high-wheel bicycle, which was popular but dangerous. By the 1880s, the 'safety bicycle' with a chain drive and equal-sized wheels became the standard. Interestingly, the safety bicycle greatly increased the popularity of cycling among women, as it allowed them to wear more practical clothing.
