In today's lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urbanization on local wildlife. Many cities have expanded rapidly, replacing natural habitats with buildings and roads. However, some species have adapted surprisingly well. For example, peregrine falcons now nest on skyscrapers, using ledges as cliff substitutes. Similarly, foxes have learned to forage in rubbish bins, and their diet has changed to include more human waste. But not all animals thrive. Amphibians, such as frogs and salamanders, are particularly vulnerable because they require moist environments and are sensitive to pollution. A recent study in London found that urban ponds, if properly managed, can support diverse amphibian populations. The key factor is water quality, not pond size. So, while urbanization poses challenges, careful planning can mitigate negative effects.
