In today's lecture, we'll discuss the history of urban planning. One key figure is Baron Haussmann, who redesigned Paris in the 1850s. He widened streets to improve traffic flow and public health, but also to prevent barricades during rebellions. His plans included creating parks, like the Bois de Boulogne, and standardizing building facades. However, his work was controversial because it displaced many working-class residents to the suburbs. Interestingly, his ideas influenced later planners worldwide, such as those in Chicago and Buenos Aires.
