In today's lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on mental health. A recent study conducted in Melbourne followed 1,000 residents over five years. Participants who lived within 300 meters of a park reported 20% lower stress levels compared to those without nearby green areas. Interestingly, the benefit was strongest for people aged 30 to 50, while teenagers showed less effect. The researchers also noted that the quality of the green space mattered more than its size. For example, a small garden with diverse plants and seating areas was more effective than a large, empty lawn. So, urban planners should prioritize well-designed green spaces over simply increasing their quantity.
