Good morning everyone. Today we're going to look at the history of the bicycle. As you might know, the first bicycle-like vehicle was invented in the early 19th century in Germany. However, it had no pedals and riders had to push their feet against the ground to move forward. It wasn't until the 1860s in France that pedals were added to the front wheel. This design, called the velocipede, was popular but very uncomfortable due to its solid rubber tires and rigid frame. It wasn't until the 1880s, when the safety bicycle was introduced with a chain drive and two equal-sized wheels, that cycling became a practical and popular mode of transport for the general public.
