Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and community gardens can reduce local temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Interestingly, the effect is strongest when green areas are connected, forming corridors that allow cool air to flow. However, the research also noted that simply planting trees along streets is less effective than creating larger, shaded zones for people to gather. So, city planners should prioritize interconnected parks over isolated green spots.
